The Most Pressing Issue In Our Society

In my opinion, one of the pressing issues in not only America but also throughout the world is the negative impact the media has on our culture. The media tends to make people feel left out. It causes the teenage girl who sees thin girls on television, to wonder why she doesn't look the same. As a result, she develops an eating disorder in a desperate effort to become "normal" even though she is already beautiful and healthy the way she was born. It causes minorities to feel different and abnormal when they see people who look nothing like them in commercials. As a result, they begin to cover up what makes them unique with makeup, hair products, or even plastic surgery in an effort to look like the flawless models they see on television or read about in fashion magazines. Society encourages us (whether directly or indirectly) to select people by the outside, not the inside. The media needs to change. Instead of tearing down people's sense of self worth, it should be building it up. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. There is no definition of "perfection" or "true beauty." No one is perfect, we all have flaws and we should learn to accept them and love ourselves. I strongly believe in the FLY motto. FLY means to "first love yourself." Once you learn how to love yourself, everything else in your life falls into place.
